In this study, we focused on the effects of international standards on development. In many countries, technological development is one of the most important factors in the formation of economic growth, which is reflected by the fact that the countries with the highest GDP per capita are those with the highest technological development. We chose the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as a prototype for our study. The ISO is the world's largest non-governmental federation of national standards organizations. It promotes the growth of standardized products and services and their quality in order to foster international trade, industry and commerce. It represents 40 percent of all standard bodies in the world. The ISO's structure is characterised by a system of committees, which is in turn subdivided into working groups and sub-working groups. The scientific committee is responsible for the definition and publication of international standards. Currently, there are 1,122 working groups and sub-working groups (ISO, 2015). For this study, we selected 12 countries that had participated in at least one ISO standard-setting organization committee: China, India, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, UK, Germany, France, USA, and Mexico. Based on the standardization networks in ISO (ISO, 2015), we identified the working groups and sub-working groups in which international standards have been published. The list of ISO committees with their respective working groups are shown in Table 1.

On the basis of literature, we created two propositions. First, an increase in the number of international standards can lead to an increase in trade volumes. Second, the technology transfer within countries and between countries at the international level is a complex issue. The project examines whether international standards can help to improve the flow of technology.
