As for Doctor Who fans who can't get to a SciFi or BBCA to watch new episodes, there's a good chance they will find their way to Bit Torrent as soon as the new episodes debut in the U.K. or the U.S. - and SciFi's streaming service is fast enough to have them available the next morning.
SciFi's Doctor Who was an early adopter of their streaming service, making it available in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, the SciFi channel was airing Doctor Who every Saturday night in its original time slot. The channel aired the complete Doctor Who season 2 DVD box set in August of 2006, and debuted the first season on DVD in November. (That's the year the series returned to BBC America.) SciFi's Doctor Who is available on its own website until 2014.
SciFi hasn't been idle. In the mid-2000s, they were one of the first cable outlets to offer a subscription-based streaming service (still available, but for a limited time). SciFi's offering, Scifimovies , delivers many full-length feature films, as well as many recent TV episodes. There's also a full-length Doctor Who season on the site. Doctor Who DVD box sets are also available on SciFi's site.
SciFi's Doctor Who season 3 DVD box set will be available in August, and I'll be eagerly awaiting its arrival. New Doctor Who episodes will be widely available soon after their U.S. broadcasts (Saturday evenings on BBC America and Sunday nights on BBC One) and SciFi will host it in its online streaming service. The BBC's license fee pays for the bulk of Doctor Who's production, so I'm not sure why the BBC feels that this situation is unacceptable, but I'll believe it when I see it.
We live in an age of rapid turnover. A new sitcom or movie is never more than a few months old before it's forgotten. A new Doctor Who episode is a well-known classic within months. I am not sure that a favorite reboot will ever be replaced, but the arrival of a new Thor movie, or a new Star Trek movie, or West Wing, or ER mini-series (which I for one would love to see on Netflix) can look and feel like a new show.
